Success Story — WordPress + Genesis Based Design Of CouponComplete.Com

Wordpress Genesis WebsiteWordpress coupled with Genesis is one of the most powerful combinations for professional websites. The flexibility of customization and sound SEO foundation makes Genesis, the first choice of majority of the WordPress developers. Likewise, when my client Jingjing Fang approached me for developing a WordPress website for her coupon website, I was glad to recommend Genesis framework for her website.

About CouponComplete.Com [Powered by WordPress + Genesis]

Couponcomplete.com is a coupon website built with the purpose of earning affiliate commission through coupon codes, vouchers, printable coupons and deals. Jingjing Fang, the owner of the website, wanted me to built a platform where it would be easy for her to not only blog about the latest offers and the deals, but she could also be able to create the printable coupons herself. This is what made this project all the more interesting.

Client’s Requirements

Couponcomplete.com was a complete website design project. Right from the wireframe to the final implementation of the design to WordPress + Genesis was required to complete the project. Here’s the outline of the project:

  1. Logo Design
  2. Photoshop Mockup (the mock-up of layout and design across various WordPress views — Home page, categories, single post and archives for custom post type).
  3. PSD to WordPress + Genesis
  4. Google Adsense Integration
  5. Social Media Integration
  6. Fully Responsive Design (for the website design that easily adapts to various screen sizes)

Special Features of the Website

Apart from the modern and minimal website design, the client demanded a very special feature for the website — ability to create the printable coupons. She wanted an interface for creating the printable coupons where she would be able fill in the required details for the coupon (coupon offer, product image, product description and coupon link). And once she fills in all the required details for the coupon and hits “Publish”, the coupon should be available on the front end as a Printable Coupon.

On the technical front, it was quite interesting to code the required functionality. WordPress custom post types and custom fields put together are a powerful feature to create robust solutions like this. I created a custom post type called “Printable Coupons” and enabled the support for custom fields to create the interface for adding new printable coupon.

Advanced custom fields, the WordPress plugin to customize the edit screens with powerful fields came in handy for creating a simple and intuitive interface for the client. The client could thus easily create the coupons just like a normal WordPress post and the view for the “Printable coupons” was customized to resemble the coupon. Here’s the screenshot:

Along with the customized view of the Printable coupons, the client also wanted the ability to sort (based on freshness and value), filter (based on the categories) and search (only the printable coupons) the coupons. All this was easily possible with one of the most powerful features of WordPress — Custom Post Types.

Web Design Challenges

Apart from the technical aspect of the website (the features and the functionality) requested by the client, there were two major challenges with this project:

  1. Brand establishment; in form of color scheme and logo design
  2. Modern, minimal and clean look and feel for the website.

The photoshop mockup / graphic design of couponcomplete.com was an unusual experience for me. The first design mockup was outright rejected by the client. This motivated me to start afresh backed by a lot of research and background work for the modern website designs which match the purpose of the coupon website well. And finally came up with this design.

Once the design was approved by the client, the last thing was to offer a logo that served the purpose of the site. The final logo design was a perfect blend of Romana Caps Classic Squares and Helvetica. The client was particularly impressed by the use of the scissors and the dashes (visual impression of cutting the traditional coupon).

Conclusion

There are multiple WordPress themes out there. But the choice of Genesis made it flexible to customize the templates as requested by the client. Genesis specific plugins, Genesis responsive slider and theme settings incredibly reduced the time in developing the website. And all this helped me in gaining another happy client 🙂
